The Department of Art, Music & Technology (DAMT) at Stevens
Institute of Technology is a newly formed area dedicated to the study
and practice of art and music and its particular relationship to
science and technology. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts
degree as an Individualized Major in one of two programs:
Art & Technology and Music & Technology. Both programs
draw upon traditional as well as new art forms, offering the student a
broad foundation in technical skills while encouraging experimentation
with new ideas, genres, and models. Interdisciplinary investigation
with one another and learning across the humanities as well as
interdependence and collaboration between artist & scientist,
artist & engineer, make it a uniquely transcultural and
transpedagogical experience. While aesthetic criteria prevail, we
foster practical experience with internships and work in the
professional arena through our visiting artists program and partnering
organizations in New York City. The Bachelor of Arts degrees in Art
& Technology and Music & Technology prepare students to be
well-versed in technical, critical, and conceptual skills, and provide
the background necessary for pursuing further education and training,
or professional placement in their respective fields.
DAMT faculty members are multidisciplinary and actively disseminate
the results of their creative and scholarly work. They exhibit and
perform internationally, are awarded prizes, fellowships, and awards
at the highest levels and are regularly published. In practice and in
teaching, the faculty represents a diversity of approaches and
philosophies.

Visiting Artists
Every year leading artists in their fields are invited to work with
our students. This aspect of the program enables students to go deeper
into an area of interest, collaborate with the most cutting-edge
thinkers and disciplines, and become involved with professionals as
life-long mentors.
Facilities
The Department of Art, Music and Technology utilizes studios,
classrooms, labs, galleries and performance spaces at Stevens
Institute of Technology and in partnership with various institutions
in New Jersey and New York City. The Media Arts Center will be
available as a classroom and lab beginning in Fall 2005. When
completed, the lab will contain seventeen Macintosh workstations with
state-of-the art audio, video, and animation software, assorted audio
and video equipment, and an isolation booth.
The Stevens Community
Stevens is one of the leading technological universities in the
country with an established reputation for innovation in science,
engineering, and technology. Against this backdrop, students in the
art and music programs will have opportunities to find unique ways of
merging their interest in technology with their passion for art or
music, an opportunity not available in most academic institutions.
