Department of Philosophy

Department Head:   Professor Lisa M. Dolling

The Department of Philosophy at Stevens Institute of Technology is committed to fostering a climate of free inquiry and intellectual stimulation by providing students with a forum where they can express their opinions, challenge beliefs, and exchange ideas in a productive and constructive manner. Our curriculum includes courses that examine both the history of philosophy, as well as such diverse topics as philosophy of science, aesthetics, political philosophy, ethics, existentialism, feminism, philosophy of language and cognitive theory -- just to name a few. Our dynamic and award-winning faculty represent a wide range of interests and expertise in the discipline, and are all active in the wider philosophical community.

The study of philosophy offers students the opportunity to reflect deeply on their chosen fields of study and assist them in gaining the kind of insight necessary to make significant contributions in their professional fields. We invite all students to participate in our classes and events and look forward to helping them achieve the most they can as students, scholars, professionals, and most importantly, human beings.

In addition to having the opportunity to take exciting and engaging classes, Stevens students are invited to engage in more informal philosophical discussions during one of our many extra-curricular events. For example, the Stevens Philosophy Club holds weekly meetings where we discuss a variety of engaging topics including things like "just war", stem-cell research, censorship, and the like. In addition, the club organizes such popular events as film nights, interdisciplinary colloquia, game nights, as well as trips to enjoy a variety of cultural events, including theatre, music, and art in and around the New York City area.

Stevens students may choose philosophy as a single major, as part of a double major, or as a minor. In addition, the curriculum of the department contributes to the following interdisciplinary programs:   Science and Technology Studies; Women, Gay and Gender Studies; Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies.
