Data Visualization and Databases

Read pages 119-144 of Internet Art (Sections: Infowar and Tactical Media in Practice, Data Visualization and Databases). For your written response, answer the following question in 1-2 paragraphs: what is the importance of database form for net art, according to Greene and/or those she quotes in this chapter?

Database form is crucial for net art in a variety of ways. Data storage, accesssability, manipulation, and visualization are key elements in netart. It is through research and implementation of these elements that net artists are able to establish their projects, creating innovative ways of looking at the internet. One example of database usage is 0100101110101101.ORG’s Life_Sharing. This project heavily relied on a database to organize data on their open server. The open server contained uploads of a variety of personal documents; documents which the artists saw as reflections of the uploaders. Ultimately, this suggested that humans themselves are simply collections of data. Data visualization is key to Lisa Jevbratt’s 1:1. 1:1 is a work that creates a portrait of the web via databases. The development of netart is inextricably tied to the concepts of data visualization and the use of databases.
